In 2017, Mehta, Deb & Rao noted that "computers are being increasingly used in [the] medical profession". They described the importance of:
- Statistical modelling
- To quickly and accurately interpret statistical data
- Laboratory computing
- To provide accurate and rapid results to tests such as blood chemistry and then match these with patient identification details
- Hospital information systems
- To consistently transmit and store data and monitor this process
More recently, there have been advancements in using technologies such as computer vision or Convolutional Neural Networks to identify malignant and benign tumors.
